Babymoon: Bathroom Shelf

This project has been in the planning stages for a long time. When I framed the bathroom mirror more than a year ago and had leftover trim, I thought it would be great for making a shelf. But it wasn't until last month when Luke (whom I love because he is awesome and also because he folds the laundry) said something like "Where am I supposed to put all these towels!", that I was motivated to move things along.

Like I said, I already had the trim pieces for the shelf support, I got that at Home Depot, but last time I checked they didn't carry in anymore. The shelf itself is a stair tread. I wanted the edge of the shelf to be rounded, but I don't have a router or any way to do that myself, so I was glad I found it. It was about three feet long but I cut it down with my miter saw. I wish it was deeper, though. The back doesn't quite reach all the way to the wall. So I just caulked the gap. Caulk is my best friend.

Babymoon: Changing Table Storage

What I've gathered from watching sit-coms is that the "babymoon" is a special trip a couple takes before the birth of their child--before all heck breaks loose--to celebrate and solidify their marriage against the coming storm. It's a good idea since for the next two months you won't actually have a marriage, just a contract with a co-worker to take turns sleepwalking while not breaking the baby. In any case, I've never had one. But I think there's a different, lesser, kind of babymoon we can talk about. This babymoon is the period when your infant is old enough to have a respectable sleep schedule and young enough that she is still sleeping almost all the time, in short Free Time. As in, "Ivy's cutting teeth; the babymoon is over."
Although I haven't been blogging much, I've been busy during this fabulous Babymoon of mine. First up, creating some extra storage in Ivy's dresser/media dresser/changing table.
I found some kind of ultra-thin (1/8th inch) plywood sheets at Home Depot, cut them to size, and fashioned them into fabric covered drawers to fill the spaces intended for DVD players in this dresser:

I wrapped the boards in fabric and left all the edges raw. Later I bound them with bias tape (that's what that's called, right?)

I ran out of fabric for the back.

All done!

Sweet girl!
