This project has been in the planning stages for a long time. When I framed the bathroom mirror more than a year ago and had leftover trim, I thought it would be great for making a shelf. But it wasn't until last month when Luke (whom I love because he is awesome and also because he folds the laundry) said something like "Where am I supposed to put all these towels!", that I was motivated to move things along.
Like I said, I already had the trim pieces for the shelf support, I got that at Home Depot, but last time I checked they didn't carry in anymore. The shelf itself is a stair tread. I wanted the edge of the shelf to be rounded, but I don't have a router or any way to do that myself, so I was glad I found it. It was about three feet long but I cut it down with my miter saw. I wish it was deeper, though. The back doesn't quite reach all the way to the wall. So I just caulked the gap. Caulk is my best friend.
I want to frame in my bathroom mirror as well. Did you paint the pieces or buy them already white? And did you nail them down? If so, did you hide the nails somehow? I'm just not sure how to proceed with this project but it's something I've wanted to do since we moved in.
ReplyDeleteHey Darilyn,
ReplyDeleteI hope you go for it because it's really easy and it makes a huge difference. The pieces I bought were unfinished. I painted them after they were installed. And I didn't use nails, I used glue. It sounds a little strange but it works great. I've tried Gorilla Glue and Liquid Nails. Gorilla Glue worked better, but it expands as it dries, so it can be tricky to keep it in place. I've also heard that construction adhesive works well for this. Good luck!
Cute! I have a router if you ever need to borrow it!
